The Constitution of India has vested in the State Election Commission of the respective State the superintendence, direction and control of the entire process for conduct of elections to the Panchayats and Municipal Bodies. This State has a tradition of holding elections to the Local Bodies regularly in accordance with the provisions of the respective State Acts and Rules made thereunder.There are, at present, 928 Zilla Parishad constituencies spread over 20 Zilla Parishads and 9 Mahakuma Parishad constituencies under Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad, 9796 Panchayat Samiti constituencies in 344 Panchayat Samitis and 58975 Gram Panchayat Constituencies in 3339 Gram Panchayats. There are 7 Municipal Corporations and 121 Municipalities in West Bengal.
